7 Ways to Speed up and Optimize Windows XP

After seeing how popular Blifaloo's guide to virus removal and prevention has become, I decided to write some more articles about taking care of your computer.
The following is a list of easy tweaks you can do to speed up the overall performance of your PC with Windows XP.

1. Disable File Indexing


Huh? This indexing service gets info from files on the hard drive and creates a "searchable keyword index."
If you don't use the XP search feature often to look for documents, you can turn this feature off, and the difference you'll notice is a slight increase in the time it takes for your computer to find a file, but an overall increase in general speed for everything else. 
How to : From My Computer > right-click on the C: Drive > select Properties.
Uncheck "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching." Apply changes to "C: sub folders and files," and click OK. 

2. Clean Up Prefetch, temp, and cache files


Huh? Windows stores a lot of temporary files that can be safely cleaned out once a month or so. This is also good to do before running virus or spyware scans, as it clears many things out of your system that would need to be scanned.

3. Install some RAM


Huh? If you are running 128mb or 256mb of Ram, it's pretty cheap and easy to upgrade to 512mb. This is the only suggestion I will make that will actually cost money, but it's also the one that will best improve performance.
How to : Not sure how to install Ram, or even what kind you need or where to get it from?

4. Remove Programs & files you no longer need or use


Huh? Having old games or other software you no longer use can take up a lot of space on your hard drive, which can lead to an overall decrease in your PC's performance.
How to : Removing old programs is easy. From the Control Panel click on the "Add or Remove Programs" Icon. You can safely remove programs like games, demos, and other software you no longer use. If you are not sure what a program is... don't delete it just yet. You can do an internet search to find out more about any mystery programs installed on your PC to decide to delete them or not.
Remember: Mp3 music files and videos you download can take up a lot of space. Go through your media files once a month or so and delete the ones you no longer use.

5. Turn off Windows Animations and Visual Effects


Huh? Fancy sliding, fading and animated effects that windows uses by default are easily turned off, and will make the reaction time of simple tasks like opening and moving windows, taskbars, etc... much quicker.
How to : From the Control Panel, click on the "System" icon. Click on the Advanced tab. Click the "Settings" button underneath "Performance". Uncheck the options related to animations, and other unneeded visual effects.
Personally, I only have 3 items checked in here: "smooth edges of screen fonts", "use common tasks in folders", and "use visual styles on windows and buttons". You can uncheck all of them if you like. But, just getting rid of all the animated features will help the responsiveness of your PC.

6. Remove unused Fonts


Huh? Having too many fonts can realllllllly slow down how fast programs start up. Some people say have no more than 500 fonts installed on WinXP, but I personally try to keep the number of fonts below 200. The less you have the faster your programs that use them (office software, graphic programs etc..) will load.
How to : From the Control Panel, click on the "Fonts" icon. You can delete the fonts you don't use here.
Remember: to keep the basics: Verdana, Arial, Times, Trebuchet, Courier, serif, sans-serif, Georgia, etc... Along with any fonts related to your business.

7. Get a Virus, Spyware and Malware Clean System


Huh? Chances are you have some sort of virus, spyware or malware on your computer.
How to : Get Adware and Spybot S&D in addition to a Firewall and Antivirus program. See our guide to virus removal and protectionfor more ifno.
Remember: Keep your anti-virus programs up-to-date. And always research any software you plan on downloading to "help" your PC. Some anti-virus / anti-spyware software actually have spyware.

Top 10 hacking incidents

Top 10 hacking incidents of all time — instances where some of the
    most seemingly secure computer networks were compromised


Early 1990s

Kevin Mitnick, often incorrectly called by many as god of hackers,
broke into the computer systems of the world's top technology and
telecommunications companies Nokia, Fujitsu, Motorola, and Sun
Microsystems. He was arrested by the FBI in 1995, but later released
on parole in 2000. He never termed his activity hacking, instead he
called it social engineering.

November 2002

Englishman Gary McKinnon was arrested in November 2002 following an accusation that he hacked into more than 90 US military computer
systems in the UK. He is currently undergoing trial in a British
court for a "fast-track extradition" to the US where he is a wanted man. The next hearing in the case is slated for today.

1995

Russian computer geek Vladimir Levin effected what can easily be
called The Italian Job online - he was the first person to hack into a
bank to extract money. Early 1995, he hacked into Citibank and robbed
$10 million. Interpol arrested him in the UK in 1995, after he had
transferred money to his accounts in the US, Finland, Holland,
Germany and Israel.

1990

When a Los Angeles area radio station announced a contest that awarded a Porsche 944S2 for the 102nd caller, Kevin Poulsen took control of the entire city's telephone network, ensured he is the 102nd caller, and took away the Porsche beauty. He was arrested later that year and sentenced to three years in prison. He is currently a senior editor at Wired News.

1983

Kevin Poulsen again. A little-known incident when Poulsen, then just
a student, hacked into Arpanet, the precursor to the Internet was hacked
into. Arpanet was a global network of computers, and Poulsen took
advantage of a loophole in its architecture to gain temporary control
of the US-wide network.

1996

US hacker Timothy Lloyd planted six lines of malicious software code
in the computer network of Omega Engineering which was a prime
supplier of components for NASA and the US Navy. The code allowed a
"logic bomb" to explode that deleted software running Omega's
manufacturing operations. Omega lost $10 million due to the attack.

1988

Twenty-three-year-old Cornell University graduate Robert Morris
unleashed the first Internet worm on to the world. Morris released 99
lines of code to the internet as an experiment, but realised that his
program infected machines as it went along. Computers crashed across
the US and elsewhere. He was arrested and sentenced in 1990.

1999

The Melissa virus was the first of its kind to wreak damage on a
global scale. Written by David Smith (then 30), Melissa spread to more
than 300 companies across the world completely destroying their
computer networks. Damages reported amounted to nearly $400 million.
Smith was arrested and sentenced to five years in prison.

2000

MafiaBoy, whose real identity has been kept under wraps because he is
a minor, hacked into some of the largest sites in the world, including
eBay, Amazon and Yahoo between February 6 and Valentine's Day in 2000. He gained access to 75 computers in 52 networks, and ordered a Denial of Service attack on them. He was arrested in 2000.

They called themselves Masters of Deception, targeting US phone
systems. The group hacked into the National Security Agency, AT&T, and Bank of America. It created a system that let them bypass
long-distance phone call systems, and gain access to private lines.

Clearing your MSN Messenger Login history

There are only a handful of people who don't have an MSN Messenger account or don't use it at all. Everyone else is MSN-ing like crazy all day, all night. Those of you, who don't have the liberty to chat up ang3l_gurl_cutie_123 every night from the comfort of their own home, probably camp at near by cyber cafes to seek solace. And if you do that, you've probably seen a bunch of other people's email addresses left behind in the dropdown list. Now if some perv peeps in to use the same computer after you're done, you're gonna have a helluva time trying to get him off your back. Why not avoid it completely? 

Of course, not visiting a cybercafe isn't really an option. But you can erase your tracks once you're done. You can do this very easily on MSN Messenger 7.5 by clicking the Forget Me button, but what if its version 7.0 or lower? On Windows XP... 

1. Go to Start -> Run, and type "control userpasswords2 

2. Switch to the "Advanced" tab and then click on "Manage passwords" . A list of saved usernames will appear. Click on the one(s) you wish to remove, and simply click "Remove". 

This may not always work. So here's another method of doing the same thing. 

1. Go to Start -> Run and type "%HOMEPATH%" and hit enter. Your home folder will open up, which will be something like "C:\Documents and Settings\yourname". Then go to "Application Data" -> "Microsoft". 

2. Delete the folder titled "Credentials". 

3. Restart Windows. The passwords should be gone! 



As a cybercafe administrator, you can disable the storage of .NET passwords on your systems. To do so... 

1. Go to Start -> Run and type "secpol.msc" and hit Enter. This will start the Local Security Settings window. 

2. Open the "Local Policies" -> "Security Options" folder. 

3. In the list on the right side, find the item "Network Access: Do not allow storage of credentials or .NET Passwords for network authentication". Right click it and select "Properties" . A settings diabog box will pop up.


4. In the box, you can choose to enable or disable the particular function. Choose "Disable" and click ok. 

Windows should not store your MSN Messenger or .NET passport passwords anymore! 

How many IP address can be assigned to a single LAN card?

It varies depending on the operating system.

DOS, likely just 1.

Windows 2000, for example, can have at least hundreds of addresses assigned, but only 51 reliably work (51 total, spread out over all your nics, weather you have one or several). After the 52nd is added, Active Directory takes a dump and bad things happen.

In Linux, it will vary by kernel version. Older kernels may be limited to 30 or so, whereas newer ones will be much higher.

For the *BSD's, they'll generally handle more than Linux (and more efficiently), but I'm not sure what the actual limit is.

Solaris on a 64 bit Sun platform probably would handle even more.

Error in IIS When You Try to Start a Web Site

When you try to use Internet Information Services Manager (IIS Manager) to start a Web site, the Web site does not start, and you may receive the following error message:
Unexpected error 0x8ffe2740 occurred


This behavior may occur if a port conflict exists on the system. By default, IIS uses port 80 for HTTP communication. If an application other than IIS is running and is using port 80 on the same IP address, you may receive the error message when you try to use IIS Manager to start the Web site.


To resolve this problem, you can do either of the following:
  • In IIS Manager, change the port bindings for the Web site to a port other than port 80.
  • Stop the application that is using port 80, and then start the Web site from IIS Manager.
  • Stop any other running web server or proxy service. You can use third-party tools like TCPView or FPort to identify the other application that is using port 80.

RRAS Memory Corruption Vulnerability - CVE-2006-2370:
There is a remote code execution vulnerability in the Routing and Remote Access Service that could allow an attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability to take complete control of the affected system.

What might an attacker use the vulnerability to do?
An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could take complete control of the affected system.

Who could exploit the vulnerability?
On Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 and Windows XP Service Pack 1, any anonymous user who could deliver a specially crafted message to the affected system could try to exploit this vulnerability. In order to exploit the vulnerability on Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2003, an attacker must have valid login credentials to a target system.

How could an attacker exploit the vulnerability?
An attacker could also access the affected component through another vector. For example, an attacker could log on to the system interactively or by using another program that passes parameters to the vulnerable component either locally or remotely.

What systems are primarily at risk from the vulnerability?
Microsoft Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 are primarily at risk from this vulnerability. Systems that use Internet Connection Sharing are also at risk as RRAS must be enabled for ICS functionality.

Are Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition or Windows Millennium Edition critically affected by this vulnerability?
No. Windows 98, Windows 98 Second Edition, and Windows Millennium Edition do not contain the affected component.

Could the vulnerability be exploited over the Internet?
An attacker could try to exploit this vulnerability over the Internet. Firewall best practices and standard default firewall configurations can help protect against attacks that originate from the Internet. Microsoft has provided information about how you can help protect your PC.
