Error in Windows XP: Power Surge on Hub Port

This document applies to HP and Compaq desktop PCs with Windows XP.
When you plug a USB device into a powered USB hub or into the USB port on your PC, one of the following errors occurs:

  • The device is not available for use or does not receive power.

  • The following error message displays:
    USB Hub Power Exceeded
This problem can occur if a high-power USB device (such as a USB hard disk) is plugged in to a PC that supports either an Intel ICH5 or ICH6 (I/O Controller Hub) system, and the USB device consumes more than 500 milliamps (mA) power.
Resolving the error
Resolve this error by connecting an external power source to power the USB device (if the device supports an external power source), or plugging the USB device into a self powered USB hub.

To disable the USB 2.0-enhanced host controller, follow these steps:

  1. Right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
  2. Under Computer Management (Local), click Device Manager.
  3. In the Device Manager pane, expand Universal Serial Bus controllers.
  4. Right-click the USB 2.0-enhanced host controller, and then click Disable

Note The name of the USB 2.0-enhanced host controller may vary.
  5. When you receive the confirmation message, click Yes.
  6. Close Device Manager.
